Our groundbreaking April-May 2018 art exhibition

This international group exhibition, held April-May 2018 at the Ronald Feldman Gallery, SoHo, New York City, featured 47 artworks related to the title theme by famous and less famous artists.
Remember the Women Institute’s exhibition, curated by Dr. Batya Brutin and coordinated by Dr. Rochelle G. Saidel, included three internationally famous American artists: Judy Chicago, Holocaust survivor Boris Lurie, and Nancy Spero. This was the first art exhibition with this theme. The thirty artists had worked in a variety of media to depict the theme of violence during both the Holocaust and later genocides. Safet Zec’s huge work about Srebrenica was complemented by a small drawing by Rwandan-American Manasse Shingiro. Curatorial consultant Rebecca Pristoop focused on presenting these later genocides, as well as those in Guatemala, Darfur, and Iraq. Sexual violence during the Holocaust was portrayed by second generation Israeli artists, as well as Gil Yefman, a brilliant young Israeli artist who is not a child or grandchild of survivors. His crocheted sex slave, which he inhabited for the opening, was a highlight. In addition to the Americans mentioned above, the exhibit included feminist artist Linda Stein’s Spoon to Shell boxes, focusing on how a spoon could mean the difference between life and death in a concentration camp, and the fine tapestries of Muriel (Nezhnie) Helfman.
Remember the Women Institute is grateful to the exhibition team, the Ronald Feldman Gallery, the artists, the Exhibition Honorary Committee, our generous donors, and our institutional partners, all detailed in the catalog. See more information about the exhibition opening.
