Never-Before-Seen Photos of Nazis’ Daily Life at Auschwitz-Birkenau Inspires Play

‘Here There Are Blueberries,’ on view now through August 21, 2022 at California’s La Jolla Playhouse, is inspired by photos acquired by an archivist at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

The play, starring Elizabeth Stahlmann as USHMM archivist Rebecca Erbelding, written by Moisés Kaufman alongside Amanda Gronich, anticipates having an East Coast debut after the positive reception in Southern California.

“Here There Are Blueberries” — the title comes from one of the photo captions handwritten in German, “Hier gibt es Blaubeeren” — takes pains to explain why an album that includes no pictures of the horrors occurring within earshot of its subjects is worth the public’s attention.

Using 116 photographs, Moisés Kaufman uncovers how Nazi officers treated Auschwitz-Birkenau like a vacation destination in “Here There Are Blueberries.” Fine wine, elaborate meals, even relaxation time with family and friends. This new play dares audience members to question their own definition of humanity.
