The second program in the Talking Memory series, Children, Trauma, and the Work of Recovery — From the Holocaust to October 7, revisits the Kindertransport through the experiences of children who were separated from their families, exploring testimony, memory, trauma, and resilience across generations.
Dr. Amy Williams, Kindertransport Scholar in Residence, Association of Jewish Refugees, draws on newly discovered archival material—including hundreds of thousands of documents connected to the Kindertransport—to revisit survivors’ testimonies, challenge longstanding myths, and explore how Kinder and their families have responded to seeing these records more than 80 years later. She will also reflect on connections between Kindertransport survivors and the experiences of Holocaust survivors affected by October 7.
Dr. Amir Peleg, chief historian in Israel, Claims Conference, presents interviews with Holocaust survivors who survived the October 7 massacre in the Western Negev, offering insight into their experiences and the ways they understand and process a new encounter with mass violence.
This is a program of testimony, historical discovery, and reflection on the enduring questions of separation, trauma, survival, and recovery. Together, the three encounters in this Talking Memory series ask how we remember, how we rebuild, and how memory can become a space for understanding and healing.
This Ghetto Fighters’ House series is in partnership with Remember the Women Institute, Brothers and Sisters for Israel, Edut 710, Rabin Chair Forum at George Washington University, and Classrooms Without Borders.
