Prof. Marshall Berman, 1940-2013

Marshall BermanMarshall Berman, who died on September 11, 2013, was my professor during the 1980's and 1990's at the CUNY Graduate Center. When I wrote my doctoral dissertation in Political Science, he was the reader who helped me to shape it. The subject was the politics of Holocaust memorialization, specifically, the creation of the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. Much has already been written about this extraordinary brilliant mentsch (see links below), and I won't repeat it. I only want to add that he was the best university professor I ever had. Rather than learning facts in his classes, my mind grew. My dissertation was certainly improved by his insightful suggestions. And I know that what I learned from him helped shape my related research on women and the Holocaust. We kept in touch after I received my doctorate in 1992. I often saw him on the street on the Upper West Side or at Congregation Ansche Chesed. He encouraged my work, and I gave him my books. When he and his wife Shellie came to Brazil, they visited us in our home there. I last saw him in in mid-May 2013, at a restaurant on the Upper West Side. I certainly did not expect that this would be the last time I would see Marshall. I will miss his presence - his unique colorful tee-shirts, his wild hair, his kindness, and especially his brilliant mind. Baruch dayan emet. Rest in peace, Marshall.
